It\u2019s the first time China outnumbered the U.S. <\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n<p>Results were reported in the media outlet\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/education\/best-global-universities\/rankings\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"icon none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Best Global Universities Rankings<\/a>\u201d released Tuesday. The U.S. and China were followed by Japan (105 universities), the United Kingdom (92), and India (81).<\/p>\n<p>The media outlet began its ranking in 2014 as more universities began competing for students, as well as faculty and research investments. The rankings are based on a range of parameters, including research reputation, publications, conferences and citations. Student outcomes and individual programs are not included.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Although China surpassed the U.S. by 58 spots, the majority of U.S. universities appear in the top half of the rankings, including 8 of the top 10, the report noted. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Here is the overall top 10 list:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol class=\"articleList\">\n<li>\n      Harvard University&nbsp;(U.S.)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      Massachusetts Institute of Technology&nbsp;(U.S.)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      Stanford University&nbsp;(U.S.)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      University of California\u2013Berkeley (U.S.)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      University of Oxford&nbsp;(U.K.)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      University of Washington\u2013Seattle (U.S.)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      Columbia University&nbsp;(U.S.)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      University of Cambridge&nbsp;(U.K.)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      California Institute of Technology&nbsp;(U.S.)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n      Johns Hopkins University&nbsp;(U.S.)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The report added four new subjects to its 43 rankings: artificial intelligence; education and educational research; meteorology and atmospheric sciences; and water resources. \u201cThey\u2019re hot fields right now and there is a lot of interest at different levels,\u201d Robert Morse, chief data strategist at U.S. News, told MarketWatch in an email.<\/p>\n<div data-layout=\"inline\" data-layout-mobile=\"\" class=\"media-object           type-InsetPullQuote             inline     scope-web|mobileapps   article__inset           article__inset--type-InsetPullQuote             article__inset--inline\">\n<div class=\"wsj-article-pullquote article__inset__pullquote\">\n<p class=\"pullquote-content article__inset__pullquote__quote\">\n        <span class=\"l-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--left\">\u201c<\/span> Among the top 10 schools for A.I., five schools were from mainland China; the U.S.\u2019s Carnegie Mellon also ranked high. <span class=\"r-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--right\">\u201d<\/span>\n      <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Artificial intelligence is among the few fields that both the U.S. and China regard as strategic national priorities. The Biden administration signed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ai.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"icon none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">National AI Initiative Act of 2020<\/a> into law in 2021, aiming to advance U.S. leadership in the field.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe world\u2019s leading powers are racing to develop and deploy new technologies like artificial intelligence and quantum computing that could shape everything about our lives \u2014 from where we get energy<br \/>\n        <a data-track-hover=\"QuotePeek\" data-charting-symbol=\"FUTURE\/US\/XNYM\/NG00\" class=\"qt-chip positive\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/investing\/future\/NG00?mod=MW_story_quote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NG00,<br \/>\n        +1.60%<\/a><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       to how we do our jobs, to how wars are fought,\u201d Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken said last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want America to maintain our scientific and technological edge, because it\u2019s critical to us thriving in the 21st century economy,\u201d Blinken <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/secretary-antony-j-blinken-at-the-national-security-commission-on-artificial-intelligences-nscai-global-emerging-technology-summit\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"icon none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said in a speech<\/a> at a technology summit last year.<\/p>\n<p>Among the top 10 schools for A.I., five schools were from mainland China, including Tsinghua University, which ranked No. 1. Carnegie Mellon University is the best U.S. college for A.I. research, ranking No. 12 on the list. China also leads in other science subjects, including <a href=\"https:\/\/nsf.gov\/news\/overviews\/nano\/index.jsp\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"icon none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">nanoscience<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nano.gov\/nanotech-101\/what\/definition\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"icon none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">nanotechnology<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/engineering\/polymer-science\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"icon none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">polymer science,<\/a> engineering and physical chemistry.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Fewer Chinese students have attended college in the U.S. since the coronavirus pandemic. From January to September 2022, 52,034 Chinese nationals received F-1 visas, down from&nbsp; 95,518 for the same period in 2019, according to t<a href=\"https:\/\/travel.state.gov\/content\/travel\/en\/legal\/visa-law0\/visa-statistics\/nonimmigrant-visa-statistics\/monthly-nonimmigrant-visa-issuances.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"icon none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">he U.S. State Department data<\/a>. The F-1 visa is used by international students to gain a degree or an academic certificate in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>While public-health concerns and travel restrictions related to the pandemic partly led to the dramatic fall in numbers over the past two years, increasing tensions between the two countries have also pushed Chinese students to gradually look for alternatives, both in China and non-U.S. options.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>International student enrollment at U.S. colleges and universities peaked in the 2015-2016 academic year and has been falling since then, the <a href=\"https:\/\/opendoorsdata.org\/data\/international-students\/new-international-students-enrollment\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"icon none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Institute of International Education<\/a> said, citing visa concerns, competition from other countries with better access to work visas, and stronger social and political ties between China and other nations.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>China has surpassed the U.S. on a major ranking of the world\u2019s best universities.
