Xylella Spreads Beyond Buffer Zones in Puglia – Olive Oil Times<\/p>\n

The spread of Xylella fas\u00adtidiosa in Puglia<\/a>, the south\u00adern Italian region, has slowed but not stopped. Signs of the infec\u00adtion have been found in a few olive trees located in an area pre\u00advi\u00adously con\u00adsid\u00adered safe.<\/p>\n

The results of the lat\u00adest mon\u00adi\u00adtor\u00ading oper\u00ada\u00adtions show that the deadly olive tree pathogen has infected 19 olive trees near Polignano a Mare, a coastal town not far from Bari, the regional cap\u00adi\u00adtal.<\/p>\n

The newly infected trees are only a few hun\u00addred meters from one of their so-called buffer zone\u2009\u2014\u2009the care\u00adfully mon\u00adi\u00adtored radius around the infected plants.<\/p>\n

Local author\u00adi\u00adties mon\u00adi\u00adtor\u00ading the spread of Xylella fas\u00adtidiosa<\/a> said they found another infected tree near Castellana Grotte, approx\u00adi\u00admately 15\u202fkilo\u00adme\u00adters south of Polignano. The tree still falls within the local buffer zone, but it is only five meters away from its outer bor\u00adder.<\/p>\n

The con\u00adstant mon\u00adi\u00adtor\u00ading of Xylella fas\u00adtidiosa has allowed author\u00adi\u00adties to track its spread in the last few years, mak\u00ading it pos\u00adsi\u00adble to allo\u00adcate resources effec\u00adtively to the most vul\u00adner\u00ada\u00adble loca\u00adtions.<\/p>\n

Tracking also has per\u00admit\u00adted author\u00adi\u00adties to gauge the effi\u00adciency of the many pro\u00adce\u00addures enacted to limit the pop\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtion of the main vec\u00adtor insects<\/a>, which are mainly respon\u00adsi\u00adble for spread\u00ading the deadly bac\u00adte\u00adria.<\/p>\n

Along with olive trees, Xylella fas\u00adtidiosa infects about 300 other plant species adding to the com\u00adplex\u00adity of main\u00adtain\u00ading effec\u00adtive infec\u00adtion and buffer zones.<\/p>\n

Local experts said the dis\u00adcov\u00adery of the newly-infected trees demon\u00adstrates the need for more com\u00adpre\u00adhen\u00adsive and rapid mon\u00adi\u00adtor\u00ading.<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>The early detec\u00adtion of the bac\u00adte\u00adria and the con\u00adtain\u00adment mea\u00adsures adopted through\u00adout the region seem to have slowed down the spread,\u201d said Donato Boscia, head of the Apulian Institute for the Sustainable Protection of Plants at the National Research Council (CNR-Ipsp), who was among the first sci\u00aden\u00adtists to focus on Xylella fas\u00adtidiosa in Italy.<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>What we need are quick and reli\u00adable tools to diag\u00adnose and inter\u00advene early as a way to stop the epi\u00addemic for which there is cur\u00adrently no treat\u00adment capa\u00adble of bring\u00ading the infected plants back to a nor\u00admal state,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

To this end, researchers said they had devel\u00adoped a new detec\u00adtion tech\u00adnol\u00adogy capa\u00adble of mak\u00ading mon\u00adi\u00adtor\u00ading oper\u00ada\u00adtions faster and more cost-effi\u00adcient.<\/p>\n

The researchers from the CNR-Ipsp, the University of Bari\u2019s pho\u00adton\u00adics and nan\u00adotech\u00adnol\u00adogy insti\u00adtute and Agritest have devised what they describe as a <\/span>\u200b\u201c<\/span>bio-sen\u00adsor.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>It is an elec\u00adtronic device that sits in the palm of your hand and can be con\u00adnected via Bluetooth to a smart device,\u201d Eleonora Macchia, a researcher at the University of Bari and co-author of the study, told Olive Oil Times.<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>It is capa\u00adble of ana\u00adlyz\u00ading very small quan\u00adti\u00adties of olive juice, just above 100\u202fmicro\u00adliters,\u201d she added. <\/span>\u200b\u201c<\/span>The analy\u00adsis can tell with 99 per\u00adcent accu\u00adracy if even just one Xylella bac\u00adterium is found in the olive tree fluid sam\u00adple.\u201d<\/p>\n

The pro\u00adto\u00adtype takes about 30\u202fmin\u00adutes to run the test in the field, far less than the two to three hours that the cur\u00adrent quan\u00adti\u00adta\u00adtive poly\u00admerase chain reac\u00adtion (qPCR) method requires in the lab.<\/p>\n

Its cre\u00adators said the new device would con\u00adsid\u00ader\u00adably cut the costs and time needed to test an olive tree. <\/span>\u200b\u201c<\/span>Costs are sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcantly reduced as the elec\u00adtronic plat\u00adforms are afford\u00adable, and even the con\u00adsump\u00adtion of reagents is reduced to the min\u00adi\u00admum,\u201d Macchia said.<\/p>\n

According to the researchers, who pub\u00adlished<\/a> their find\u00adings in Advanced Science, the pro\u00adto\u00adtype also can detect Xylella fas\u00adtidiosa infec\u00adtions in asymp\u00adto\u00admatic plants.<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>That gives us a con\u00adsid\u00ader\u00adable advan\u00adtage as it moves the diag\u00adno\u00adsis to an ear\u00adlier stage, where pre\u00adven\u00adtive med\u00adi\u00adcine can be applied,\u201d Macchia said.<\/p>\n

Its reli\u00ada\u00adbil\u00adity and other qual\u00adi\u00adties might enable author\u00adi\u00adties to extend their mon\u00adi\u00adtor\u00ading oper\u00ada\u00adtions. <\/span>\u200b\u201c<\/span>That is one of the first goals, as it could be used to screen large num\u00adbers with a min\u00adi\u00admally inva\u00adsive method and at a low cost,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

However, Macchia warned that mon\u00adi\u00adtor\u00ading teams would need some time to adopt the device. <\/span>\u200b\u201c<\/span>We are work\u00ading on that as fast as we can; we hope this pro\u00adto\u00adtype will make a dif\u00adfer\u00adence in the com\u00ading years,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

Local author\u00adi\u00adties are cur\u00adrently try\u00ading to sup\u00adport strug\u00adgling grow\u00aders by deploy\u00ading pub\u00adlic funds<\/a> to alle\u00advi\u00adate the eco\u00adnomic fall\u00adout<\/a> of Xyella fas\u00adtidiosa\u2019s spread.<\/p>\n

In mid-October, Donato Pentassuglia, Puglia\u2019s agri\u00adcul\u00adtural sec\u00adre\u00adtary, con\u00adfirmed that new funds would be avail\u00adable for olive grow\u00aders in the Lecce and Brindisi provinces and sev\u00aderal other munic\u00adi\u00adpal\u00adi\u00adties in Taranto by the end of the year. Some of the poten\u00adtial recip\u00adi\u00adents had lamented the slow bureau\u00adcratic process.<\/p>\n

The sup\u00adport is par\u00adtial com\u00adpen\u00adsa\u00adtion for the losses accu\u00admu\u00adlated between 2018 and 2019 and will go to grow\u00aders whose pro\u00adduc\u00adtion vol\u00adumes have dropped more than 30 per\u00adcent because of the infec\u00adtion.<\/p>\n

Approximately 500 com\u00adpa\u00adnies in the olive oil pro\u00adduc\u00adtion chain have received com\u00adpen\u00adsa\u00adtion for only \u20ac4 mil\u00adlion against the \u20ac51.5 mil\u00adlion cur\u00adrently avail\u00adable.<\/p>\n
