{"id":22121,"date":"2022-11-03T21:55:20","date_gmt":"2022-11-03T22:55:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peymantaeidi.net\/stem-cell\/?p=22121"},"modified":"2022-11-03T23:47:39","modified_gmt":"2022-11-03T23:47:39","slug":"uc-professors-exceptional-contribution-recognised","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peymantaeidi.net\/stem-cell\/2022\/11\/03\/uc-professors-exceptional-contribution-recognised\/","title":{"rendered":"UC Professors\u2019 Exceptional Contribution Recognised"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/peymantaeidi.net\/stem-cell\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/scoop_image.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\" alt=\"image\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"story-top\">\n<p>           <span class=\"byline\"><b>Friday,  4 November 2022, 10:52 am<\/b><br \/><b>Press Release: <a href=\"https:\/\/info.scoop.co.nz\/University_of_Canterbury\">University of Canterbury<\/a><\/b><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Outstanding professors who have retired from the<br \/>\nUniversity of Canterbury (UC) over the past year but<br \/>\ncontinue to contribute and inspire have been acknowledged at<br \/>\na celebration event.<\/p>\n<p>UC has appointed seven Emeritus<br \/>\nProfessors in the last 12 months, including Alison Downard,<br \/>\nSchool of Physical and Chemical Sciences, Keith Alexander<br \/>\nDepartment of Mechanical Engineering, Maan Alkaisi and Phil<br \/>\nBones, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering,<br \/>\nDave Kelly, School of Biological Sciences, David Norton<br \/>\nSchool of Forestry, and Rob Hughes, School of Psychology,<br \/>\nSpeech and Hearing.<\/p>\n<p>Emeritus Professor is an honorary<br \/>\ntitle awarded by the UC Council to retiring, long-serving<br \/>\nprofessors who have made an outstanding contribution to<br \/>\ntheir field.<\/p>\n<p>The University\u2019s new Emeritus<br \/>\nProfessors were celebrated at the P\u014d Whakam\u0101nawa |<br \/>\nCelebrating Excellence event held on campus this week to<br \/>\nacknowledge the accomplishments of UC academics.<\/p>\n<p>The<br \/>\nseven new Emeritus Professors are:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Emeritus<br \/>\nProfessor Keith Alexander<\/strong>, who retired from UC\u2019s<br \/>\nMechanical Engineering Department in October, has a national<br \/>\nand international reputation for product innovation and<br \/>\ndevelopment, including designing the well-known Springfree<br \/>\ntrampoline, which prioritises safety. Springfree trampolines<br \/>\nhave sold over 500,000 models around the world.<\/p>\n<p>During<br \/>\nhis career he was a design engineer for Hamilton Jet, the<br \/>\nKiwi waterjet company, and worked on the Aquada, a<br \/>\nhigh-speed car that turns into a high-speed jet boat on the<br \/>\nwater.<\/p>\n<p>More recently he initiated the development of<br \/>\nthe Kera patient transfer system, a new way to safely<br \/>\ntransfer people with mobility issues.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Emeritus<br \/>\nProfessor Maan Alkaisi<\/strong> was a founding member and a<br \/>\nprincipal investigator of the MacDiarmid Institute for<br \/>\nAdvanced Materials and Nanotechnology from 2002 to<br \/>\n2021.<\/p>\n<p>As a Professor in UC\u2019s Department of<br \/>\nElectrical and Computer Engineering, he led the<br \/>\nnanotechnology research group and played a significant role<br \/>\nin establishing the Nanofabrication<br \/>\nLaboratory.<\/p>\n<p>Emeritus Professor Alkaisi\u2019s interests<br \/>\ncover nanotechnology science and engineering, solar cells<br \/>\ndevelopment and fabrication and the interface between<br \/>\nphysics and biology.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Emeritus Professor Phil<br \/>\nBones<\/strong> worked for 11 years as biomedical engineer in<br \/>\nthe Department of Cardiology, Canterbury Hospital Board,<br \/>\nChristchurch, and two years as postdoctoral fellow with<br \/>\ncardiac groups in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>He began working in UC\u2019s<br \/>\nDepartment of Electrical and Computer Engineering in 1988<br \/>\nand retired from teaching in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>His research<br \/>\ninterests include biomedical engineering, neuromorphic<br \/>\ncomputing, image processing and medical<br \/>\nimaging.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Emeritus Professor Alison<br \/>\nDownard<\/strong> is an internationally leading<br \/>\nelectrochemist who was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of<br \/>\nNew Zealand Te Ap\u0101rangi in 2014. In the same year she won a<br \/>\nprestigious distinction for international scientists, an<br \/>\nHonorary Doctorate from Universit\u00e9 de Rennes 1,<br \/>\nFrance.<\/p>\n<p>She was a Principal Investigator with the<br \/>\nMacDiarmid Institute for Advanced Materials and<br \/>\nNanotechnology (2002-2021) and is a recipient of the Royal<br \/>\nAustralian Chemical Institute\u2019s RH Stokes medal (2014)<br \/>\nwhich recognises distinguished research in electrochemistry,<br \/>\ncarried out mainly in Australasia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Emeritus<br \/>\nProfessor Rob Hughes<\/strong> spent 57 years teaching at UC.<br \/>\nHe has research interests in behavioural pharmacology and<br \/>\ncomparative psychology and has investigated the effects of<br \/>\nbehaviourally active psychiatric and recreational drugs,<br \/>\nespecially caffeine.<\/p>\n<p>In recognition of his<br \/>\ncontribution, he has been awarded Fellowships of the NZ<br \/>\nPsychological Society, the Association for Psychological<br \/>\nResearch and the Psychological Society of Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>His<br \/>\nmany roles, nationally and internationally, include being a<br \/>\nmember of the New Zealand Ministry of Transport&#8217;s Working<br \/>\nParty on Detection of Drug Impairment in Drivers, (1987-89)<br \/>\nand a Mental Health Consultant for the United Nations World<br \/>\nHealth Organization to assess the use and availability of<br \/>\npsychotropic medication in Vietnam<br \/>\n(1995).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Emeritus Professor Dave Kelly<\/strong><br \/>\njoined Plant and Microbial Sciences (later Biological<br \/>\nSciences) at UC as a lecturer in 1985 and retired at the end<br \/>\nof 2021, although he continues to carry out<br \/>\nresearch.<\/p>\n<p>He is known internationally for his study of<br \/>\nmast seeding which is a significant conservation issue in<br \/>\nAotearoa New Zealand. His other major research area has been<br \/>\nthe impacts on pollination and fruit dispersal in the<br \/>\ndecline in Aotearoa New Zealand\u2019s bird fauna following the<br \/>\nintroduction of predatory exotic mammals (particularly<br \/>\nstoats and rats).<\/p>\n<p>He has collected many awards over<br \/>\nhis career, including the Te Tohu Taiao award from NZ<br \/>\nEcological Society (2000), Fellowship of the Royal Society<br \/>\nof New Zealand Te Aparangi (2002), UC Teaching Award (2011),<br \/>\nUC Research Medal (2013) and Hutton Medal<br \/>\n(2013).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Emeritus Professor David<br \/>\nNorton<\/strong>, who retired from UC at the start of this<br \/>\nyear, has over 40 years\u2019 experience in Aotearoa New<br \/>\nZealand ecology and conservation biology issues.<\/p>\n<p>His<br \/>\nresearch spans Aotearoa New Zealand\u2019s native forests,<br \/>\nconservation and management of threatened plants, and<br \/>\nrestoration ecology.<\/p>\n<p>Over the last two decades, he has<br \/>\ndeveloped a strong relationship with the farming sector,<br \/>\nworking with farmers, the farming community and sector<br \/>\ngroups to promote biodiversity conservation and find ways to<br \/>\nbuild this into farm management planning, and he has<br \/>\ncontinued this work in his<br \/>\nretirement.<\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scoop.co.nz\/about\/terms.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>\u00a9 Scoop Media<\/span><\/a>\n         <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Friday, 4 November 2022, 10:52 amPress Release: University of Canterbury Outstanding professors who have retired<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":7793,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/peymantaeidi.net\/stem-cell\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/22121"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/peymantaeidi.net\/stem-cell\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/peymantaeidi.net\/stem-cell\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/peymantaeidi.net\/stem-cell\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/peymantaeidi.net\/stem-cell\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=22121"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/peymantaeidi.net\/stem-cell\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/22121\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":22123,"href":"https:\/\/peymantaeidi.net\/stem-cell\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/22121\/revisions\/22123"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/peymantaeidi.net\/stem-cell\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/7793"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/peymantaeidi.net\/stem-cell\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=22121"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/peymantaeidi.net\/stem-cell\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=22121"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/peymantaeidi.net\/stem-cell\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=22121"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
