{"id":22319,"date":"2022-11-04T21:47:24","date_gmt":"2022-11-04T22:47:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peymantaeidi.net\/stem-cell\/?p=22319"},"modified":"2022-11-04T23:59:26","modified_gmt":"2022-11-04T23:59:26","slug":"data-summit-majors-on-ethics-in-data-use-demonstrates-diversity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peymantaeidi.net\/stem-cell\/2022\/11\/04\/data-summit-majors-on-ethics-in-data-use-demonstrates-diversity\/","title":{"rendered":"Data Summit majors on ethics in data use, demonstrates diversity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Data Lab\u2019s Data Summit conference in Edinburgh took the ethical use of data as an over-arching theme.<\/p>\n<p>Speakers included science broadcaster Hannah Fry, Nasa\u2019s chief science data officer, Kevin Murphy, Edinburgh University global public health chair Devi Sridhar, and Tom Arthur, minister for public finance, planning and community wealth in the Scottish government.<\/p>\n<p>The strapline for the conference was \u201cData: A new hope\u201d, and it aimed to focus on how data and artificial intelligence (AI) can be used to create a better world and society.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerweekly.com\/news\/252526743\/Scotlands-Data-Lab-CEO-Brian-Hills-on-its-ambition-to-change-lives\">Brian Hills, CEO of The Data Lab<\/a>, said: \u201cWhile more businesses adopted digital technology during the pandemic and have lots of fantastic data, many still need to understand how to use it, and know they must get it right in terms of the ethics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope the event has inspired delegates to believe that Scotland can become home to the world\u2019s most impactful data community, nurturing companies that will change the world for the better through a greater understanding of data and its implementation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur, in a keynote address, confirmed the Scottish government\u2019s interest in data and its potential to secure a better future for society, but cautioned it must be used ethically, or it won\u2019t gain public support.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"main-article-image half-col\" data-img-fullsize=\"https:\/\/peymantaeidi.net\/stem-cell\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Brian-Hills-The-Data-Lab-at-Data-Summit-800px.jpg\">\n <img data-src=\"https:\/\/peymantaeidi.net\/stem-cell\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Brian-Hills-The-Data-Lab-at-Data-Summit-800px_half_column_mobile.jpg\" class=\"lazy\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/peymantaeidi.net\/stem-cell\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Brian-Hills-The-Data-Lab-at-Data-Summit-800px_half_column_mobile.jpg 960w,https:\/\/peymantaeidi.net\/stem-cell\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Brian-Hills-The-Data-Lab-at-Data-Summit-800px.jpg 1280w\" height=\"178\" width=\"279\" src alt=\"image\" \/><figcaption>\n  <i class=\"icon pictures\" data-icon=\"z\"><\/i>Brian Hills, CEO of The Data Lab: \u201cWhile more businesses adopted digital technology during the pandemic and have lots of fantastic data, many still need to understand how to use it, and know they must get it right in terms of the ethics\u201d<br \/>\n <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>First minister Nicola Sturgeon said, in a statement in support of the government-backed organisation: \u201cData is central to the Scottish government\u2019s vision for our economic future. It is an area where Scotland already excels, where we are ambitious to do better, and which has potential for significant economic opportunities and important social benefits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cData is absolutely crucial to tackling social and economic challenges, creating jobs and wealth, and improving people\u2019s health and well-being. The talent, innovation and energy on display at an event like Data Summit demonstrates that the data sector here in Scotland is in good health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The conference took place at Edinburgh International Conference Centre on 3 and 4 November. It had a range of speakers that included quantum computing professors, nanotechnologists, entrepreneurs, data ethicists, philosophers, musicians and artists.<\/p>\n<p>The first day\u2019s roster of speakers was predominantly female, and included Stephanie Hare, whose book <em>Technology is not neutral<\/em> was named by the <em>Financial Times<\/em> as one of its tech books of the year.
