{"id":22889,"date":"2022-11-08T23:20:28","date_gmt":"2022-11-09T00:20:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peymantaeidi.net\/stem-cell\/?p=22889"},"modified":"2022-11-09T00:44:37","modified_gmt":"2022-11-09T00:44:37","slug":"the-clever-way-we-fix-sewer-pipes-fills-the-air-with-nanoplastics-research-finds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peymantaeidi.net\/stem-cell\/2022\/11\/08\/the-clever-way-we-fix-sewer-pipes-fills-the-air-with-nanoplastics-research-finds\/","title":{"rendered":"The clever way we fix sewer pipes fills the air with nanoplastics, research finds"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"post-title-meta-block\">\n<div class=\"post-title-meta-block-inner\">\n<div class=\"post-categories\"><span>Innovation<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"post-content-wrap\">\n<div class=\"post-content-inner\">\n<div class=\"image-block\">\n<div class=\"block-inner core-block-inner\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/peymantaeidi.net\/stem-cell\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/081122-Pipes-testing.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-58376\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Purdue researchers test a cure-in-place pipe intervention (Courtesy of Purdue University)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"heading-block\">\n<div class=\"block-inner core-block-inner\">\n<h6>A helpful method for fixing underground sewage and water pipes in a way that avoids digging big trenches is actually pumping tiny plastic particles into the air, often in densely populated urban areas, scientists at Indiana\u2019s Purdue University have found.<\/h6>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-block\">\n<div class=\"block-inner core-block-inner\">\n<p>When a pipe breaks, contractors used to have to dig a trench big enough to let crews cut out the broken section and replace it with a new one.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-block\">\n<div class=\"block-inner core-block-inner\">\n<p>Now, a more surgical approach called curing-in-place lets them insert a stent in the pipe in the form of a resin-soaked fabric tube or sock, and then inflate the stent with pressurised steam so it can seal the pipe.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-block\">\n<div class=\"block-inner core-block-inner\">\n<p>The technique removes a lot of time and hassle, but the plumes of vapour it sends into the air contain polluting chemicals, including what scientists say are \u201csignificant\u201d volumes of nanoplastics.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-block\">\n<div class=\"block-inner core-block-inner\">\n<p>Nanoplastics are particles measuring 100 nanometres or fewer across. One nanometre is 0.000001mm.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-block\">\n<div class=\"block-inner core-block-inner\">\n<p><strong>Nanoplastic volcanoes<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-block\">\n<div class=\"block-inner core-block-inner\">\n<p>It had been thought that microplastics \u2013 particles smaller than 0.5mm in diameter \u2013 and nanoplastics entered the air, water and soil mostly when plastic degrades and wind or other disturbances break bits off.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"image-block\">\n<div class=\"block-inner core-block-inner\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"240\" height=\"427\" src=\"https:\/\/peymantaeidi.net\/stem-cell\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/081122-Pipes-plume.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-58377\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Researchers said they often saw workers standing right in the vapour plumes, sometimes to get warm in winter (Courtesy of Purdue University)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-block\">\n<div class=\"block-inner core-block-inner\">\n<p>\u201cWhat we show here is that there is a process commonly used throughout the whole modern world that is dumping nanoplastic pollution into the air,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/newsroom\/releases\/2022\/Q4\/somethings-in-the-air-its-nanoplastic-pollution.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said study leader Alexander Laskin<\/a>, professor of analytical chemistry in Purdue\u2019s College of Science.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-block\">\n<div class=\"block-inner core-block-inner\">\n<p>His team collected condensate from the vapour plumes and subjected it to comprehensive chemical analysis.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-block\">\n<div class=\"block-inner core-block-inner\">\n<p>This, they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41565-022-01219-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a> in the journal <em>Nature Nanotechnology<\/em>,\u201crevealed the abundant presence of insoluble colloids, which after drying form solid organic particles with a composition and viscosity consistent with [nanoplastics]\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-block\">\n<div class=\"block-inner core-block-inner\">\n<p>Studies show that we <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9026096\/#:~:text=Nanoplastics Destroy Cell Membrane Structure,important role in this process.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">accumulate nanoplastics<\/a> in our bodies by breathing, drinking and eating them, although scientists aren\u2019t sure yet what the long term health effects are.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-block\">\n<div class=\"block-inner core-block-inner\">\n<p><strong>Lovely and warm?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-block\">\n<div class=\"block-inner core-block-inner\">\n<p>Andrew Whelton, a Purdue professor of civil, environmental and ecological engineering who contributed to the study, has been researching cure-in-place pipe repair methods for almost a decade.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-block\">\n<div class=\"block-inner core-block-inner\">\n<p>He said they often saw workers standing right in the vapour plumes, sometimes to get warm in winter.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-block\">\n<div class=\"block-inner core-block-inner\">\n<p>\u201cThis new study indicates these workers and ones before them have likely been inhaling microplastics and nanoplastics,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-block\">\n<div class=\"block-inner core-block-inner\">\n<p>He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wboi.org\/news\/2022-11-04\/purdue-university-researchers-say-common-construction-practice-is-major-source-of-nanoplastic-pollution\">told<\/a> Indiana radio station WBOI that the problem was solvable either by capturing the vapour plumes, or by changing the chemicals used in the process.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph-block\">\n<div class=\"block-inner core-block-inner\">\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the issue here,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s technologies and approaches to fix the issue that are fairly straightforward, but nothing is changing because there is no driving force to cause it to change.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"post-sharing-icons post-sharing-icons-bottom\">\n<div class=\"story-for-cm\">Story for GCR?
