It wasn\u2019t 11 dashing and charismatic career hustlers knocking over three Las Vegas casinos on fight night. An unassuming couple pulled it off the day after Thanksgiving, 1985.<\/p>\n<div class=\"halfway_hardwall_1\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"article_paragraph_2\"><\/div>\n<p>With the wife using chit-chat to distract employees at the University of Arizona Museum of Art on the ground floor upon opening, her husband cut Willem de Kooning\u2019s <em>Woman-Ochre<\/em> (1954-1955) from its frame and tore it from a backing canvas in a gallery upstairs. The painting\u2019s value: $160 million.<\/p>\n<div class=\"halfway_hardwall_2\"><\/div>\n<p>They were inside in less than 15 minutes. There were no alarms. No cameras. No leads.<\/p>\n<div class=\"halfway_hardwall_3\"><\/div>\n<p>That treasure was lost until owners of Manzanita Ridge Furniture &amp; Antiques in Silver City, NM acquired it\u2013unknowingly\u2013in 2017 along with other art and furniture from an estate sale for a deceased couple in Cliff, NM, a remote, desolate corner of the state. Once on view in the store, customers recognized the painting, leading the new owners to call the museum.<\/p>\n<div class=\"halfway_hardwall_4\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"vestpocket\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cSurreal is the best way I can describe it. The day started off in such an ordinary way and ended with such excitement and angst,\u201d Olivia Miller, interim director and Curator of Exhibitions at the University of Arizona Museum of Art, told Forbes.com about <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.getty.edu\/iris\/podcast-the-recovery-and-conservation-of-a-stolen-de-kooning\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/blogs.getty.edu\/iris\/podcast-the-recovery-and-conservation-of-a-stolen-de-kooning\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/blogs.getty.edu\/iris\/podcast-the-recovery-and-conservation-of-a-stolen-de-kooning\/\" aria-label=\"the day the museum was contacted\">the day the museum was contacted<\/a> with information that it\u2019s de Kooning had potentially been found. \u201cIt was incredibly exciting, yet we felt enormous pressure to not make any missteps along the way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Much of the day was spent with the University of Arizona Police Department and contacting the FBI.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe waiting was the hardest part,\u201d Miller remembers, although she would set her eyes on the painting less than 48 hours after the museum was phoned by David Van Auker from the antique store saying he wanted to return the painting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe didn\u2019t know anything about him,\u201d Miller said. \u201cI was worried that if too much time passed, he might change his mind and hide the painting, or try to claim ownership. Joy that would shortly after be combined with a sick stomach. During the robbery and in the possession of the thieves\u2013more on them later\u2013the painting had been ruined.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I initially saw <em>Woman-Ochre<\/em>, I could certainly see there was a lot of damage, however, my feelings about its condition were overshadowed by my excitement that it still existed and had actually been found\u201d Miller said. \u201cI was also living in the moment\u2014at that point, our main priority was getting the painting to a secure location. It wasn\u2019t until a few days later when Dr. Nancy Odegaard (Head of the Preservation Division at the Arizona State Museum at the U of A) did the preliminary authentication that I began to understand just how much damage the painting had suffered. It was quite overwhelming to see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hastily cut from its frame, likely with a box cutter, the husband robber was surprised to find the painting had been affixed to an additional backing in a previous conservation. Unable to quickly hack through both layers, the thief peeled the original painting from the supporting layer resulting in terrible surface cracking and paint loss. The painting was rolled up like a poster to transport out of the museum without detection. It had been amateurishly varnished at some point while in the hands of the thieves, store-bought glue applied to the back, re-stapled into a new frame.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLos Angeles Times\u201d art critic Christopher Knight, who saw the painting pre-conservation, described it as a \u201ccorpse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe canvas was as rumpled as last night\u2019s sheets\u2014a lumpy terrain whose painted image was lost in a visual muck of disheveled paint marks, yellowed varnish and all that awful, crackled damage,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/story\/2022-05-31\/commentary-stolen-de-kooning-painting-getty-conservation?utm_id=57337&amp;sfmc_id=3280484\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/story\/2022-05-31\/commentary-stolen-de-kooning-painting-getty-conservation?utm_id=57337&amp;sfmc_id=3280484\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/story\/2022-05-31\/commentary-stolen-de-kooning-painting-getty-conservation?utm_id=57337&amp;sfmc_id=3280484\" aria-label=\"he wrote.\">he wrote.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was alarming; I had heard the tale and knew what to expect, but it was by far the most damaged painting I had seen,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/damaged-de-kooning-on-display-at-last\/id1125550898?i=1000567361889\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/damaged-de-kooning-on-display-at-last\/id1125550898?i=1000567361889\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/damaged-de-kooning-on-display-at-last\/id1125550898?i=1000567361889\" aria-label=\"Getty Museum conservator Laura Rivers said\">Getty Museum conservator Laura Rivers said<\/a>. \u201cWhen it arrived, it came into the studio and the damage was almost all you could see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The painting\u2019s condition was beyond what the University of Arizona could repair. It was beyond what almost any museum could repair. After receipt of the picture, U of A Museum of Art officials convened a group of de Kooning and art conservation experts to determine how to best salvage <em>Woman-Ochre<\/em>. They recommended sending it to The Getty Museum in Los Angeles Paintings Conservation department and Getty Conservation Institute\u2019s (GCI) laboratories, a collective of art conservation specialists akin to the Avengers.<\/p>\n<p>This was no ordinary job. Getty experts used dental tools, microscopes, spectrometers, computer mapping creating millions of data points, Macro X-Ray Fluorescence, a team of specialists with hundreds of years combined experience\u2013expertise in chemistry, physics, nanotechnology. Meticulous labor and cutting-edge science applied toward putting the jigsaw puzzle of microscopic paint chips back together again, rebuilding de Kooning\u2019s masterpiece.<\/p>\n<p>And they did it. Free of charge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Getty did an incredible job with the conservation treatment, bringing <em>Woman-Ochre<\/em> back to a state where one is first struck by the painting itself as de Kooning intended,\u201d Miller said. \u201cWhile evidence of the theft is no longer the first thing you see, upon closer and longer examination, one can see visible scars from the theft. The goal of the treatment was not to completely hide the theft\u2014it is a part of the painting\u2019s life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before sending the revived painting to U of A, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getty.edu\/news\/long-lost-willem-de-kooning-painting-goes-on-view-for-first-time-since-theft\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.getty.edu\/news\/long-lost-willem-de-kooning-painting-goes-on-view-for-first-time-since-theft\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.getty.edu\/news\/long-lost-willem-de-kooning-painting-goes-on-view-for-first-time-since-theft\/\" aria-label=\"the Getty put it on exhibition this past summer\">the Getty put it on exhibition this past summer<\/a> along with details of its conservation. The series is considered monumental in the way that it imagines the human figure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCollectively, these paintings are some of his most familiar works, in part because he was working figuratively at a time when many of his peers, such as Jackson Pollock, were abandoning figural representation in their work,\u201d Miller explains.<\/p>\n<p><em>Woman-Ochre<\/em> was gifted to the museum in 1958 by Edward Joseph Gallagher, Jr.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Woman-Ochre<\/em> was featured in significant exhibitions in the United States and around the world,\u201d Miller said. \u201cOne of them, prophetically titled \u2018The Disappearance and Reappearance of the Image,\u2019 traveled throughout Europe, while other exhibitions took <em>Woman-Ochre<\/em> to Australia, Japan and various countries in South America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A critically important painting by a critically important artist.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subhead-embed color-accent bg-base font-accent font-size text-align\">Villains<\/h2>\n<p>What of the thieves? We have been waiting so long for the painting to return and now that it is finally back, there is a weight lifted,\u201d she said. \u201cI am still struck when I walk through the galleries and it catches my eye.
