{"id":26362,"date":"2022-11-25T03:15:32","date_gmt":"2022-11-25T04:15:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peymantaeidi.net\/stem-cell\/?p=26362"},"modified":"2022-11-26T16:36:21","modified_gmt":"2022-11-26T16:36:21","slug":"grants-to-study-mood-disorder-treatments-impact-of-sleep-on-brain-ageing-36","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peymantaeidi.net\/stem-cell\/2022\/11\/25\/grants-to-study-mood-disorder-treatments-impact-of-sleep-on-brain-ageing-36\/","title":{"rendered":"Grants to study mood disorder treatments &amp; impact of sleep on brain ageing"},"content":{"rendered":"<div> Sydney researchers have received two National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Synergy Grants worth $10 million.\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>Two University of Sydney research teams have been awarded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaltribune.com.au\/grants-to-study-mood-disorder-treatments-impact-of-sleep-on-brain-ageing\/#\">NHMRC Synergy Grants<\/a> to lead projects that will research causes and treatments for mood disorders, as well as the connection between sleep and cognitive decline.<\/p>\n<p>The Synergy Grants, support outstanding multidisciplinary teams of investigators to work together to answer major questions relating to human health and medical research that cannot be answered by a single investigator.<\/p>\n<p>Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaltribune.com.au\/grants-to-study-mood-disorder-treatments-impact-of-sleep-on-brain-ageing\/#\">Ian Hickie<\/a> and Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaltribune.com.au\/grants-to-study-mood-disorder-treatments-impact-of-sleep-on-brain-ageing\/#\">Sharon Naismith<\/a> have each been awarded a $5 million grant.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>Professor Hickie\u2019s grant will enable his team to investigate causes and to personalise treatments for body clock dysfunction in mood disorders, while Professor Sharon Naismith\u2019s team will explore the role of sleep disturbance in accelerating cognitive decline, which can lead to dementia.<\/p>\n<p><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3515969088936742\" data-ad-slot=\"4170717403\"><\/ins><\/p>\n<p>Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaltribune.com.au\/grants-to-study-mood-disorder-treatments-impact-of-sleep-on-brain-ageing\/#\">Robyn Ward<\/a>, Executive Dean of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaltribune.com.au\/grants-to-study-mood-disorder-treatments-impact-of-sleep-on-brain-ageing\/#\">Faculty of Medicine and Health<\/a>, congratulated the researchers on their success.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese grants will facilitate our world-renowned researchers to bring together multidisciplinary experts to work on these critical research projects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will enable these two teams to truly innovate, with the potential to provide rapid solutions to these significant global health challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaltribune.com.au\/grants-to-study-mood-disorder-treatments-impact-of-sleep-on-brain-ageing\/#\">Philip Gale<\/a>, Interim Dean of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaltribune.com.au\/grants-to-study-mood-disorder-treatments-impact-of-sleep-on-brain-ageing\/#\">Faculty of Science<\/a>, said that the awarding of these grants is a recognition of the researchers\u2019 hard work and innovation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe challenge is to develop robust scientific testing, to build evidence, and to explore beyond what we already know. This Synergy funding is crucial in supporting these researchers and their teams to strengthen and expand collaborations across disciplines, to leverage their networks, and to build capacity and sustainability for these world-class projects. However, causes and optimal treatments for these mood disorders remain unclear.<\/p>\n<p>This grant will enable Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaltribune.com.au\/grants-to-study-mood-disorder-treatments-impact-of-sleep-on-brain-ageing\/#\">Ian Hickie<\/a>, the Co-Director, Health and Policy at the University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaltribune.com.au\/grants-to-study-mood-disorder-treatments-impact-of-sleep-on-brain-ageing\/#\">Brain and Mind Centre<\/a>, to conduct an investigation into body clock dysfunction in mood disorders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to transform scientific and clinical understanding by assembling a multidisciplinary team of experts in clinical psychiatry, psychiatric genetics, circadian systems, nanotechnology, and modelling and co-design the project with individuals with lived experience of these conditions,\u201d said Professor Hickie.<\/p>\n<p><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3515969088936742\" data-ad-slot=\"4170717403\"><\/ins><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe propose that body clock dysfunction is a pathogenic mechanism underlying many mood disorders, and that correction of this dysfunction needs to be targeted with precise circadian therapies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will use new Australian nanotechnology to monitor molecular changes in the circadian system from a drop of blood at single molecule resolution, and conduct clinical, genetic and laboratory studies to investigate the causes of circadian dysfunction on illness and its progression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we\u2019re able to develop the technology to track subtle changes in circulating biomarker levels, we will be better able to personalise care.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h2> Sleep research to transform brain ageing<br \/><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/peymantaeidi.net\/stem-cell\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/cq5dam.web_.1280.1280-1.jpeg\" alt=\"Professor Sharon Naismith smiling\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/peymantaeidi.net\/stem-cell\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/cq5dam.web_.1280.1280-1.jpeg\" alt=\"Professor Sharon Naismith smiling\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption\">\n<p>Professor Sharon Naismith<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Clinical Neuropsychologist Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaltribune.com.au\/grants-to-study-mood-disorder-treatments-impact-of-sleep-on-brain-ageing\/#\">Sharon Naismith<\/a> and her team will use the grant to examine the patterns, quality and duration of sleep of at-risk individuals.<\/p>\n<p><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3515969088936742\" data-ad-slot=\"4170717403\"><\/ins><\/p>\n<p>Using techniques such as overnight blood sampling and innovative brain imaging techniques, they will seek to understand how sleep disturbance contributes to cognitive decline, which can lead to dementia.<\/p>\n<p>More than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaltribune.com.au\/grants-to-study-mood-disorder-treatments-impact-of-sleep-on-brain-ageing\/#\">50 million people globally live with dementia<\/a> with 10 million new diagnoses every year. Professor Naismith said that while there is no cure for dementia, around 40-percent of dementia risk factors are modifiable.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Naismith is the Head of the Healthy Brain Ageing Program at the Brain and Mind Centre and the Leonard P Ullman Chair in Psychology at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationaltribune.com.au\/grants-to-study-mood-disorder-treatments-impact-of-sleep-on-brain-ageing\/#\">Charles Perkins Centre<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResearch over the past decade has demonstrated strong connections between sleep disturbance and dementia, suggesting that it is a viable risk but also a prevention target,\u201d Professor Naismith said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, we do not yet know how sleep disturbance leads to dementia brain pathology; when the damaging effects of sleep disturbance are most pronounced; or what the impact of treatments might be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the world\u2019s population continues to age, we hope our revolutionary approach to addressing sleep disturbance will improve wellbeing and cognitive health, with the potential to ultimately change the functioning and quality of life for millions globally.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3515969088936742\" data-ad-slot=\"4850877326\"><\/ins> <\/p>\n<div class=\"shim-wrap float-right mt-2\"> <button class=\"shim-summ text-right\">Source <i class=\"fa fa-caret-right\"><\/i> <i class=\"fa fa-caret-down\"><\/i><\/button> <\/p>\n<div class=\"shim-detail\">\/University Release.
