{"id":26448,"date":"2022-11-27T01:10:02","date_gmt":"2022-11-27T02:10:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peymantaeidi.net\/stem-cell\/?p=26448"},"modified":"2022-11-27T02:38:04","modified_gmt":"2022-11-27T02:38:04","slug":"ohsu-osu-researchers-discover-nanotechnology-could-detect-treat-ectopic-pregnancies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peymantaeidi.net\/stem-cell\/2022\/11\/27\/ohsu-osu-researchers-discover-nanotechnology-could-detect-treat-ectopic-pregnancies\/","title":{"rendered":"OHSU, OSU researchers discover nanotechnology could detect, treat ectopic pregnancies"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/peymantaeidi.net\/stem-cell\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/46dd5b9c-7756-4d1e-a30c-a3ec48098c01_1140x641.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\" alt=\"image\" \/><\/div>\n<p>In a blend of technical research and medical expertise, new findings could help care for people with serious pregnancy complications<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>PORTLAND, Ore. \u2014 Breakthrough<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kgw.com\/health\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">&nbsp;medical research&nbsp;<\/a>shows nanotechnology could be used to better detect and treat ectopic pregnancies, according to researchers from Oregon Health &amp; Science University and Oregon State University.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>An ectopic pregnancy is a pregnancy in which the fertilized egg grows outside of the uterus. It&#8217;s often painful and can be dangerous.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>Dr. Leslie Myatt, OHSU professor of obstetrics and gynecology and director of perinatal research, said up to 100,000 pregnancies per year in the United State are estimated to be ectopic pregnancies.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>Myatt said ectopic pregnancies&#8217; are currently tough to diagnose and tough to treat, and this new research may provide a better way forward.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>\u201cResearch is 99% frustration, 1% pure elation,&#8221; Myatt said, adding that he&#8217;s referencing Thomas Edison. &#8220;This was definitely one of those moments of pure elation, that\u2019s for sure.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>Myatt said he learned about the nanotechnology research of Dr. Olena Taratula, an Oregon State University research associate professor, and asked if they could work together.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>&#8220;[To] design some kind of nanoparticles and we can use them for ectopic pregnancy diagnosis and treatment,&#8221; Taratula said.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/smll.202202343\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">The hypothesis was<\/a> \u2014 those nanoparticles would attach themselves to the placenta, and then doctors could scan to see where the egg is growing. If it\u2019s growing outside the uterus, that\u2019s evidence of a dangerous ectopic pregnancy.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>Researchers tested their hypothesis on mice \u2014 and <a href=\"https:\/\/news.ohsu.edu\/2022\/11\/21\/nanotechnology-may-better-identify-treat-ectopic-pregnancy\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">it worked.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>&#8220;We were all over the moon, particularly when we did the first imaging experiments where we had injected the nanoparticle and saw it would then localize to the placenta and it lights up like little lightbulbs,&#8221; Myatt said. &#8220;It was like whoa, this is absolutely amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>Taratula shared his enthusiasm.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>&#8220;You want to tell everyone, start texting your friends, see what I\u2019ve done,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Even friends who don\u2019t understand anything about this, hey it\u2019s working!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>However, the research didn\u2019t stop there.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>Myatt, Taratula and others discovered they could heat up the nanoparticles to break down the placenta \u2014 a seemingly effective treatment that\u2019s noninvasive and not painful.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>&#8220;Secondarily, when we went on to treat with the infrared light and cause the disruption of the tissue it was like whoa, we\u2019re really onto something here,&#8221; Myatt said. &#8220;So yeah, we were very excited by it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>Myatt said the current cancer drug used to treat ectopic pregnancies has serious side effects and fails about 10% of the time.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>So this technology could both better detect and treat a serious condition which affects between 1 and 2% of pregnancies each year in the United States.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>&#8220;If your technology comes through and helps, and it\u2019s simple and efficient, that\u2019s a goal, that\u2019s a dream I guess,&#8221; Taratula said.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>The researchers are now conducting safety studies to show the nanoparticles are non-toxic and don\u2019t affect future fertility.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>They also discovered that the heating of the nanoparticles does not cross the placenta to affect the fetus \u2014 encouraging news as it reduces danger in the case of a viable pregnancy<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>Next, they plan to test the research on non-human primates.
