It\u2019s this cold weather<\/strong><strong> \u2013 makes my glasses mist up [removes them, uses snotty tissue to wipe]. That\u2019s a bit better, for now. <\/strong>Well, as luck would have it, there may be help available.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-18sg7f2\"><strong>Saved! Go on.<\/strong> Scientists have developed a coating that stops condensation forming on your eyewear.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-18sg7f2\"><strong>Which scientists? Where? <\/strong>A team led by Professors Dimos Poulikakos and Thomas M Schtuzius at the ETH Zurich research institute in Switzerland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-18sg7f2\"><strong>Never heard of them<\/strong><strong>. They sound legit though.<\/strong> Very much so. And the results were published in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41565-022-01267-1\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Nature Nanotechnology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-18sg7f2\"><strong>How does it work then? <\/strong>Traditional anti-fog sprays work by coating surfaces with molecules that attract water to make an even, see-through surface. This new coating actually prevents condensation forming, by warming the surface of the glass by up to 8C.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-18sg7f2\"><strong>Kind of like <\/strong><strong>the heated rear window of a car?<\/strong> Exactly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-18sg7f2\"><strong>Does that mean I\u2019m going to have my view impeded by a maze of wires, and have a dirty great car battery strapped to the back of my head? Might as well fit wipers, too, why don\u2019t you? <\/strong>No, this coating is able to absorb infrared radiation from the sun, which warms the glass. The researchers say it could be used for car windscreens, too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-18sg7f2\"><strong>Science is amazing. What\u2019s the coating made of?<\/strong> Gold!<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-18sg7f2\"><strong>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VQ4qrcHyYj4\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Always believe in your soul, you\u2019ve got the power to know<\/a> \u2026\u201d <\/strong>Sandwiched between two layers of titanium oxide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-18sg7f2\"><strong>\u201cYou\u2019re indestructible, Always believe in \u2026\u201d Hang on, how am I supposed to see through all this metal?<\/strong> We\u2019re talking nanoparticles here. The whole coating is one 12th the thickness of gold leaf \u2013 it\u2019s completely transparent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-18sg7f2\"><strong>Isn\u2019t gold famously quite expensive though?<\/strong> Again, nanoparticles, remember. Very little gold is needed. The researchers say material costs aren\u2019t high, but they are also looking into other less expensive metals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-18sg7f2\"><strong>I don\u2019t think Profs Poulikakos and Schtuzius know where I get my glasses. <\/strong>Specsavers?<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-18sg7f2\"><strong>The internet. Also Poundland (guess how much they are). I buy loads, and just leave them around the places I might need them<\/strong><strong>. <\/strong>Yeah, but they\u2019re going to steam up, aren\u2019t they? But what about at night, when there\u2019s less infrared light around?
