Financial terms were not disclosed.<\/p>\n<p>However these chips will be produced in Japan at some point in the next few years.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"BWwyg9k7Ql\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wraltechwire.com\/2021\/05\/06\/big-blues-chip-breakthrough-ibm-unveils-smaller-more-powerful-semiconductor\/\">Big Blue\u2019s chip breakthrough: IBM unveils smaller, more powerful semiconductor<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIBM is honored to be partnering with Rapidus on developing the next generation of semiconductor technologies and helping to position&nbsp;<span class=\"xn-location\">Japan<\/span> as a leader in one of the world\u2019s most strategic technology areas,\u201d said Dar\u00edo Gil, senior vice president and director of Research at IBM, <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ibm.com\/2022-12-12-IBM-and-Rapidus-Form-Strategic-Partnership-to-Build-Advanced-Semiconductor-Technology-and-Ecosystem-in-Japan\">in the announcement<\/a>. \u201cThis collaboration is critical to ensure a geographically balanced global supply chain of advanced semiconductors, built through a vibrant ecosystem of like-minded companies and nations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The emphasis is on 2 nanometer chip tech developed by IBM, the first developed at that scale.<\/p>\n<p>IBM says the chip \u201cis projected to achieve 45% better performance or 75% more energy efficiency than leading 7 nm chips.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, MIT and Taiwan chip firm Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company say <a href=\"https:\/\/wraltechwire.com\/2021\/05\/21\/mit-taiwan-chip-firm-say-they-top-ibms-chip-breakthrough\/\">they have developed an even smaller one.<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"vmp4jQVV2P\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wraltechwire.com\/2021\/05\/21\/mit-taiwan-chip-firm-say-they-top-ibms-chip-breakthrough\/\">MIT, Taiwan chip firm say they top IBM\u2019s chip breakthrough<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span class=\"xn-person\">Atsuyoshi Koike<\/span>, president and CEO of Rapidus, noted. \u201cThis is a long-desired international collaboration, truly essential for <span class=\"xn-location\">Japan<\/span>&nbsp;to once again play a vital role in the semiconductor supply chain. I am fully confident that this collaboration will pave the way for our goal of contribution to the well-being of humanity through advanced logic semiconductors produced with technologies jointly developed with IBM.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>IBM and Rapidus scientists and engineers will work jointly in Japan and at a nanotech facility in New York.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis 2 nm technology is intended to be market-leading and will be compatible with industry standard offerings.
