The most common way to obtain natural melanin is to extract it from sepia ink or bird feathers, which makes it difficult to scale, and not vegan. The cost of a vial of chemically synthesized melanin starts at \u20ac700 per gram.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-a-chance-discovery\">A chance discovery<\/h2>\n<p>Behind OXYCO are two enzyme discovery scientists, Maria F\u00e1tima Lucas, CEO of ZYMVOL BIOMODELING, and Nikola Lon\u010dar, CEO of GECCO BIOTECH. It was in GECCO\u2019s lab where the biomelanin was first produced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt all started with a new set of enzymes we had just found: the first time we grew microbes to produce them, we were surprised with the resulting dark color of fermentation media,\u201d Lon\u010dar said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/peymantaeidi.net\/stem-cell\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/MelaninOXYCO-Fermentor.jpg\" alt=\"MelaninOXYCO Fermentor\" class=\"wp-image-111285\" width=\"336\" height=\"448\" \/><figcaption>Photo\/OXYCO<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cOnce we were able to understand the reaction mechanism, it became clear that we had found a fermentative melanin production process.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-6\">\n<div class=\"in-article mb-2\">\n<div class=\"more\"><span>Content continues below<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"wrap\">\n<h3 class=\"title\">Related Content<\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Since then, his team has performed instrumental analysis of the produced biomelanin and confirmed it has identical structure to the natural melanin isolated from sepia.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a stable compound and mixes well in creams, which makes it a great ingredient for different products.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Multiple uses<\/h2>\n<p>Due to its novel nature and diversity of applications, the OXYCO team believes industries like personal care, food &amp; beverages, and even nanotechnology can benefit from this new bio-pigment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust imagine the possibilities: with biomelanin as an ingredient, we could have sunscreens that are high-protection and sea-friendly; or produce more sustainable semiconductors with natural materials,\u201d F\u00e1tima Lucas said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a completely new market, and the potential is huge.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new Barcelona-based company, OXYCO has been created to produce melanin through biocatalysis.
