Throughout his presidency, Reif navigated the pandemic, remained a staunch advocate for diversity on campus, and weathered controversy surrounding the university\u2019s relationship with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<h2 id=\"boston_university\" class=\"heading | font_secondary gutter_20_0--mobile margin_bottom\">Boston University<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"image | relative margin_bottom_16           margin_top width_full           false           false\">\n<figure class=\"font_primary false                false               false\" id=\"img-ZKN43AUPZQI6DLZZFIAQG6IL3Y\"><figcaption class=\"img_caption | margin_horizontal_0--mobile margin_horizontal_0--tablet\"><span class=\"caption | margin_right_half\">Boston University President Robert Brown announced plans in September to step down from the role at the end of the academic year.<\/span><span class=\"credit uppercase\">The Boston Globe\/JOSH REYNOLDS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\"><span class=\"html-render\">After almost two decades in the role, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2022\/09\/07\/metro\/after-17-years-bu-president-brown-step-down\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">President Robert Brown announced plans in September to step down<\/a> from the role at the end of the academic year. Brown intended to remain president until 2025, but said it felt like the right time to leave. After a sabbatical, Brown will return to the university\u2019s College of Engineering to continue teaching.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\"><span class=\"html-render\">Boston University\u2019s Presidential Search Committee has yet to find the university\u2019s next leader.<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<h2 id=\"tufts_university\" class=\"heading | font_secondary gutter_20_0--mobile margin_bottom\">Tufts University<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"image | relative margin_bottom_16           margin_top width_full           false           false\">\n<figure class=\"font_primary false                false               false\" id=\"img-6KB7JTRP72PE2UPQA6PBYDMVU4\"><figcaption class=\"img_caption | margin_horizontal_0--mobile margin_horizontal_0--tablet\"><span class=\"caption | margin_right_half\">Sunil Kumar was appointed the fourteenth president of Tufts University.<\/span><span class=\"credit uppercase\">Alonso Nichols\/Tufts University<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\"><span class=\"html-render\">In November, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2022\/11\/17\/metro\/tufts-university-announces-sunil-kumar-its-next-president\/?p1=BGSearch_Overlay_Results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tufts named Sunil Kumar as the university\u2019s next president<\/a>. Kumar, originally from India, served as Johns Hopkins\u2019s provost and vice president of student affairs, and is now Tufts\u2019s first president of color in its 170-year history. In past leadership roles, Kumar valued diversity, equity, and inclusion, and said he hopes to further embrace those values to make Tufts more accessible to students of all socioeconomic backgrounds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\"><span class=\"html-render\">Kumar succeeds Tufts President Anthony Monaco, 63, who in February<b> <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2022\/02\/14\/metro\/president-tufts-university-retire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<b> <\/b>his plans to retire<\/a> after 12 years in the role. In collaboration with the Broad Institute, Monaco played a crucial role in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2022\/02\/14\/metro\/president-tufts-university-retire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">development of COVID-19 testing<\/a> that facilitated the return of in-person learning. Tufts made strides in the areas of climate change, health disparities, civic engagement, and mental health during Monaco\u2019s presidency, he told the Globe.<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<h2 id=\"emerson_college\" class=\"heading | font_secondary gutter_20_0--mobile margin_bottom\">Emerson College<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"image | relative margin_bottom_16           margin_top width_full           false           false\">\n<figure class=\"font_primary false                false               false\" id=\"img-GYER7NCIOV7L5HOV7HULJISJ2A\"><figcaption class=\"img_caption | margin_horizontal_0--mobile margin_horizontal_0--tablet\"><span class=\"caption | margin_right_half\">Lee Pelton, the former president of Emerson College, is now the CEO of Boston Foundation.<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"credit uppercase\">Erin Clark\/Globe Staff<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\"><span class=\"html-render\">President Lee Pelton left his leadership role at Emerson in June 2021 to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2020\/12\/01\/metro\/lee-pelton-emerson-president-will-be-boston-foundations-next-ceo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">become the CEO of local nonprofit leader The Boston Foundation<\/a>, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wgbh.org\/news\/local-news\/2020\/12\/01\/emerson-president-pelton-announces-plan-to-step-down-head-boston-foundation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WGBH report<\/a>. Chen, 57, served as the school\u2019s vice chancellor of research, innovation, and economic development, and she was also a mechanical engineering professor. Chen is known as one of New England\u2019s top experts in nanotechnology, earning her the nickname \u201cnanoqueen.\u201d Chen is the second woman to lead UMass Lowell, and the<b> <\/b>first openly gay leader in the UMass system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\"><span class=\"html-render\">Chen comes after Jacquie Moloney stepped down from the role this June. During her time as chancellor, Moloney launched the school\u2019s first comprehensive fundraising campaign, which ultimately raised $165 million.<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<h2 id=\"harvard_university\" class=\"heading | font_secondary gutter_20_0--mobile margin_bottom\">Harvard University<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"image | relative margin_bottom_16           margin_top width_full           false           false\">\n<figure class=\"font_primary false                false               false\" id=\"img-ZSMFOKNIJVCC2JFBGCPLZ6CO5U\"><figcaption class=\"img_caption | margin_horizontal_0--mobile margin_horizontal_0--tablet\"><span class=\"caption | margin_right_half\">Claudine Gay, dean of the Harvard University\u2019s faculty of arts and sciences, reacted to a warm welcome after arriving to be named the university\u2019s next president. <\/span><span class=\"credit uppercase\">Erin Clark\/Globe Staff<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\"><span class=\"html-render\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2022\/12\/15\/metro\/claudine-gay-named-next-president-harvard-university\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Claudine Gay will be the next president<\/a> of the Harvard community, the university announced Dec. 15, becoming the first Black person to lead the university. Her selection comes at a time when the institution is reckoning with its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2022\/04\/26\/metro\/landmark-report-harvard-confronts-its-ties-slavery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">historical ties to racism and slavery<\/a>. Gay, 52, has experience in leadership as the Edgerley Family Dean of Harvard\u2019s Faculty of Arts and Sciences, where she advocated for greater student access to resources, and guided a diverse body of faculty through the pandemic, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.harvard.edu\/gazette\/story\/2022\/12\/harvard-names-claudine-gay-30th-president\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harvard Gazette report<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\"><span class=\"html-render\">Gay\u2019s appointment comes after President Lawrence Bacow announced he will<b> <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2022\/06\/08\/metro\/harvard-president-lawrence-bacow-step-down-next-summer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">step down<b> <\/b>from the position<\/a> in June 2023, marking an end to his five years in the role. Bacow previously served as Tufts president, and was at the helm of Harvard during the Trump administration and during the pandemic. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2022\/06\/08\/metro\/harvard-president-lawrence-bacow-step-down-next-summer\/?p1=BGSearch_Advanced_Results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">During his time as president<\/a>, Bacow, 71, championed affirmative action, and was dedicated to deconstructing Harvard\u2019s ivory tower by forming positive connections with historically Black colleges and universities and international students.<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<h2 id=\"university_of_massachusetts_amherst\" class=\"heading | font_secondary gutter_20_0--mobile margin_bottom\">University of Massachusetts Amherst<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"image | relative margin_bottom_16           margin_top width_full           false           false\">\n<figure class=\"font_primary false                false               false\" id=\"img-AHGY5LHI6UI6RN56IRA3KB564U\"><figcaption class=\"img_caption | margin_horizontal_0--mobile margin_horizontal_0--tablet\"><span class=\"caption | margin_right_half\">The Chancellor of UMass Amherst, Kumble R. Subbaswamy, announced plans to step down from the role at the end of June 2023, after more than a decade in the position.<\/span><span class=\"credit uppercase\">Jonathan Wiggs\/Globe Staff\/file<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\"><span class=\"html-render\">UMass Amherst chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy announced plans to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2022\/06\/02\/metro\/umass-amherst-chancellor-step-down-summer-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">step down from the role<\/a> at the end of June 2023, after more than a decade in the position. Subbaswamy helped Massachusetts\u2019s flagship university increase graduation rates, conduct meaningful research, and attract a diverse student body. During his last year in the role, Subbaswamy told the Globe he would focus on sustainability, diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph | gutter_20_0\"><span class=\"html-render\">UMass Amherst launched a search for the campus\u2019s next leader in July. Hanlon was president since 2013.
