But here, the work is quiet \u2013 and clean.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow\">Enter the <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/ev\">EV<\/a> economy, built around solving some of the various problems, challenges and opportunities associated with electric cars.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow\">This includes upending the entire idea of what it means to be an automotive service technician in the 21st century. These days, it\u2019s all about integrating the \u2018traditional\u2019 \u2013 oil, spare parts, fluids \u2013 with a \u2018knowledge economy\u2019 built around computers, software and circuits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow\">\u201cTechnologists rather than mechanics,\u201d is how Mubasher Faruki, the associate dean of the automotive program at the British Columbia Institute of Technology, characterizes the work they do in these high-tech, data-oriented labs.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"l-longform-article__h2 l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow\">Supercharging the auto repair shop<\/h2>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow\">In the specialized EV lab, an instructor, Jim Berladyn, opens up a giant vehicle battery containing 400 volts of electricity, enough to instantly electrocute a person if the pack is not handled carefully.<\/p>\n<div class=\"l-longform-article__div l-longform-article__content l-article__part\" data-shortcode=\"caption\">\n<figure class=\"c-figure c-figure--longform l-longform-article__content c-figure--wide l-longform-article__content--wide l-longform-article__content--inner c-figure--alignnone c-figure--expandable\">\n<div class=\"c-figure__inner\"><figcaption class=\"c-figure__caption c-longform-caption\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"c-longform-caption__desc\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\tInstructor Jim Berladyn helps a student with a \u2018live-dead-live\u2019 test. They then detach the battery from the underside of the car. They attach monitors to these powerful energy sources to see how they\u2019re working, and to diagnose potential problems in their circuitry.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\">[embedded content]<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow\">The students and their instructors get help and support from the vehicle manufacturers, but because the technology is changing so rapidly \u2013 \u201cthe manufacturers are building the plane as they fly it,\u201d Faruki says&nbsp; \u2013 sometimes the class even stumbles across its own little discoveries as they dig into the car\u2019s internal systems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow\">Some of the newer students, Faruki says, are \u201ca little intimidated\u201d by it, not having expected to be working with computers and data to the extent that they do right from the get-go.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow\">But, he adds, \u201cif the manufacturers are producing these vehicles, then it makes no sense not to teach our students on this.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"l-longform-article__h2 l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow\">EV economic opportunities<\/h2>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow\">Gas-powered cars aren\u2019t going anywhere any time soon, and most EVs are still out of reach for the vast majority of Canadians.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow\">Still, across the country, a range of different economic opportunities are springing up around EVs, as both federal and some provincial governments drastically ramp up their commitments to getting more battery-powered cars on the road.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\">[embedded content]<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow\">Figuring out how to service them is, in many ways, the easy part. Technicians, Faruki says, are used to constant change, as technology is constantly evolving in cars \u2013 now, with EVs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow\">But what about improving how you extract the minerals and elements required to make car batteries? When the second girl gets a Tesla, that\u2019s OK. When you have 10 or 20 or 30 people trying to drive electric vehicles, there\u2019s not enough electricity in the building.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow\">ChargeLab has raised about $21 million USD so far. Lefevre, like many entrepreneurs, isn\u2019t unfamiliar with the experience of knocking on doors trying to raise money only to have them slam shut in your face, especially in Canada.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-longform-article__ad\">\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow\">That, too, was the experience that Amanda Hall faced early on.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"l-longform-article__h2 l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow\">Looking for lithium<\/h2>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow\">Her startup, Summit Nanotech, is solving the problem of extracting lithium from the ground in ways that aren\u2019t as harmful to the surrounding environment. Instead, Summit is eyeing the Atacama Desert in Chile, the site of some of the world\u2019s most highly concentrated and accessible lithium reserves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow\">The company\u2019s engineers developed the technology at a lab in Calgary. Then, they shipped the equipment needed to do the actual mining and extraction work to Chile in giant sea containers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow\">Their proprietary technology is still in the research stage, which means they\u2019re not selling the lithium they\u2019re mining out of the ground, at least not yet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow\">But, says Hall, investors are increasingly seeing the value of diversifying beyond oil and gas, and that includes Canadian investors who weren\u2019t \u201creally up for the risk\u201d of backing a cleantech company.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow\">That\u2019s changed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow\">The startup has raised nearly $65 million USD, and has gone from 10 staff members in 2020 to 70, says VP of human resources Colleen Ham.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow\">\u201cThe price of lithium and the demand for lithium has just continuously chugged uphill,\u201d Hall says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow\">\u201cWhich means that it\u2019s a stable place to sink your money and invest.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"l-longform-article__h2 l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow\">Economic impact<\/h2>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow\">There isn\u2019t a lot of data so far on the direct or indirect economic impacts of electric vehicles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow\">For example, Statistics Canada has not published any information on how much EVs contribute to Canada\u2019s GDP. What we do know, however, is how many EVs are hitting the road each year, numbers that are fast growing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow\">The vast majority of new <a href=\"https:\/\/www150.statcan.gc.ca\/n1\/daily-quotidien\/230124\/dq230124a-eng.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EVs are being sold in Canada\u2019s three largest provinces<\/a>, Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia. In Ontario, EVs represented 7.2 per cent of all new vehicle registrations in the third quarter of 2022. In Quebec, it was 12.5 per cent, and in B.C., nearly one out of every five new cars sold (17.6 per cent) is an EV.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow\">There\u2019s still a long way to go before EVs become the norm, though. Countrywide, they still represent less than 10 per cent of all new car registrations, and EVs are still out of reach from a price perspective for many customers.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\">[embedded content]<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow\">But things are changing rapidly, with governments, electrical utilities and even major oil companies like Petro Canada, Irving Oil and Parkland all investing in charging infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"l-longform-article__p l-longform-article__content l-longform-article__content--narrow\">That bodes well for entrepreneurs like Zak Lefevre who\u2019ve made big bets on an all-electric future.
