This is&nbsp;thanks in part to breakthroughs in computing power and advances in molecular manipulation at the DNA level.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<p>A new study led by Japanese scientists advances cancer research through the use of artificial DNA, or &#8220;synthetic DNA&#8221; that leads cancer cells to self-destruction.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"PA_mid-article\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"cacher\">\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<p>What\u2019s new in the therapy is that the techniques doesn\u2019t try to &#8220;crush&#8221; cancer cells directly.&nbsp;Instead, it uses DNA nanotechnology, which involves the design and assembly of artificial DNA structures to deliver therapeutic agents to cancer cells.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<figure class=\"media-portrait pull-left\">\n<p>            <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/peymantaeidi.net\/stem-cell\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Artficial-DNA_1863be4ae81_original-ratio.jpg\" alt=\"Artficial DNA\" \/><figcaption class=\"image-caption\">\n<p>            <span class=\"image-credit\">Image Credit: University of Tokyo | Gulf News<\/span><br \/>\n    <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<p>It can be used in combination with other therapies to treat at least three forms of cancer, researchers said.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"adv\">\n<div id=\"gulfnews_uae_article_1\" data-gpt=\"Gulfnews_Article\/gulfnews_uae_article\/gulfnews_uae_article_1\" data-atf=\"0\" data-size=\"[320,50]\" data-size-mapping=\"[ [ [ 1024, 500 ], [ [300,100], [300,250], [710,250], [710,400], [1,1], [336,280], [200,200], [250,250] ] ],[ [ 768, 420], [ [300,100], [300,250], [1,1], [336,280], [200,200], [250,250] ] ],[ [640, 320], [ [300,250], [300,100], [1,1], [336,280], [200,200], [250,250] ] ],[ [0, 0], [ [300,250], [300,100], [1,1], [336,280], [200,200], [250,250] ] ] ]\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<p>The research is poised to make a difference in cancer research in at least two ways:<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<p>(1) It found the formation of long DNA strands \u2014 due to the interaction between short DNA oHPs and overexpressed miR-21 \u2014 as the first example of its use as a \u201cselective immune amplification response\u201d (SIAR), a technique that allows specific tumours to be targeted.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<p>(2) This provides a new class of nucleic acid drug candidates with a mechanism that is completely different from known nucleic acid drugs, researchers said.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<h2>What the tests found<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<p>The research group which started the work to create a new anti-cancer drug using artificial DNA at the University of Tokyo was led by Assistant Professor Kunihiko Morihiro and Professor Akimitsu Okamoto from the Graduate School of Engineering. Here&#8217;s what the researchers found:<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<ul>\n<li>The tests were effective against \u201cover-expressed\u201d miR-21 found in human cervical cancer-derived cells, human triple-negative breast cancer-derived cells, and mouse malignant melanoma-derived cells.<\/li>\n<li>The study results offer good news for doctors, drug discovery researchers and cancer patients, in a number of ways:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"adv\">\n<div id=\"gulfnews_uae_article_2\" data-gpt=\"Gulfnews_Article\/gulfnews_uae_article\/gulfnews_uae_article_2\" data-atf=\"0\" data-size=\"[320,50]\" data-size-mapping=\"[ [ [ 1024, 500 ], [ [300,100], [300,250], [710,250], [710,400], [1,1], [336,280], [200,200], [250,250] ] ],[ [ 768, 420], [ [300,100], [300,250], [1,1], [336,280], [200,200], [250,250] ] ],[ [640, 320], [ [300,250], [300,100], [1,1], [336,280], [200,200], [250,250] ] ],[ [0, 0], [ [300,250], [300,100], [1,1], [336,280], [200,200], [250,250] ] ] ]\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<p>(1) It will give them new options for drug development and medication policies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<p>(2) New discovery based on the results of this research will aid in drug research.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<p>(3) Further research is needed to test in detail the drug efficacy, safety, dosage and potential administration methods.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<p>The researchers thought that if they can create new drugs that work by a different &#8220;mechanism&nbsp;of action&#8221; from that of conventional drugs, they may be effective against untreatable cancers.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<h2>More studies needed<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<p>The research needs various steps, including clinical trials (on humans) before a treatment can be made available and go through approval process.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"adv\">\n<div id=\"gulfnews_uae_article_3\" data-gpt=\"Gulfnews_Article\/gulfnews_uae_article\/gulfnews_uae_article_3\" data-atf=\"0\" data-size=\"[320,50]\" data-size-mapping=\"[ [ [ 1024, 500 ], [ [300,100], [300,250], [710,250], [710,400], [1,1], [336,280], [200,200], [250,250] ] ],[ [ 768, 420], [ [300,100], [300,250], [1,1], [336,280], [200,200], [250,250] ] ],[ [640, 320], [ [300,250], [300,100], [1,1], [336,280], [200,200], [250,250] ] ],[ [0, 0], [ [300,250], [300,100], [1,1], [336,280], [200,200], [250,250] ] ] ]\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<p>Though follow-up studies are needed to take it forward, the Japanese researchers are confident in the benefits of the therapy for new drug discovery.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<h2>What is selective immune amplification response (SIAR)?<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<p>It  refers to a strategy in cancer immunotherapy that aims to selectively enhance the immune response against cancer cells. This is achieved by targeting specific molecules \u2014 or pathways \u2014 that are involved in the immune system&#8217;s recognition and attack of cancer cells.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"story-block\">\n<div class=\"story-block pull-left\">\n<div class=\"fact-box\">\n<div class=\"fact-box-title\">Immunotherapy<\/div>\n<div class=\"fact-box-content\">\n            Immunotherapy is a type of therapy that uses substances to stimulate or suppress the immune system to help the body fight cancer, infection, and other diseases. <\/p>\n<p>Some types of immunotherapy only target certain cells of the immune system.
