{"id":45019,"date":"2023-03-16T22:27:26","date_gmt":"2023-03-16T23:27:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/peymantaeidi.net\/stem-cell\/?p=45019"},"modified":"2023-03-16T23:36:03","modified_gmt":"2023-03-16T23:36:03","slug":"embrace-green-tech-revolution-or-risk-falling-behind-new-un-report-warns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peymantaeidi.net\/stem-cell\/2023\/03\/16\/embrace-green-tech-revolution-or-risk-falling-behind-new-un-report-warns\/","title":{"rendered":"Embrace green tech revolution or risk falling behind, new UN report warns"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/peymantaeidi.net\/stem-cell\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/image770x420cropped.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\" alt=\"image\" \/><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe are at the <strong>beginning of a technological revolution <\/strong>based on green technologies,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/unctad.org\/en\/Pages\/Home.aspx\">UNCTAD<\/a> Secretary-General Rebeca Grynspan said. \u201cThis new wave of technological change will have a <strong>formidable impact<\/strong> on the global economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 17 <strong>frontier technologies<\/strong> covered in UNCTAD\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/unctad.org\/system\/files\/official-document\/tir2023_en.pdf\">Technology and Innovation Report 2023<\/a> have the potential to create market revenues of more than $9.5 trillion by 2030, about three times the size of India\u2019s economy today.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Coherent action<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Used to produce goods and services with <strong>smaller carbon footprints<\/strong>, the new wave of green technologies spans <strong>artificial intelligence<\/strong> to <strong>electric vehicles<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The report calls for <strong>coherent policy action<\/strong> to enable developing countries to <strong>profit from green tech<\/strong> or risk facing growing economic inequalities, as developed countries reap most of the benefits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDeveloping countries must capture more of the value being created in this technological revolution to grow their economies,\u201d Ms. Grynspan said. \u201c<strong>Missing this technological wave<\/strong> because of insufficient policy attention or lack of targeted investment in building capacities <strong>would have long-lasting negative implications<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Early adopters advance faster<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>While green tech exports from <strong>developing nations rose<\/strong> to $75 billion from $57 billion between 2018 and 2021, their <strong>share of the global market fell<\/strong> to 33 per cent from 48 per cent. During the same period, green exports from developed countries jumped to $156 billion from $60 billion.<\/p>\n<p>UNCTAD\u2019s analysis shows that <strong>developing countries must act quickly<\/strong> and move to a development trajectory leading to more diversified, productive, and competitive economies. Previous technological revolutions have shown that <strong>early adopters can move ahead quicker<\/strong> and create lasting advantages.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Wanted: agency and urgency<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Proactive industrial, innovation, and energy <strong>policies targeting green technologies are needed<\/strong> in developing countries so they can benefit from the green tech revolution, said Shamika N. Sirimanne, director of UNCTAD&#8217;s technology and logistics division.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDeveloping countries need agency and urgency in coming up with the right policy responses,\u201d she said. \u201cAs developing countries respond to today\u2019s urgent interconnected crises, they also need to take <strong>strategic, long-term action<\/strong> to build innovation and technological capacities to spur sustainable economic growth and <strong>increase their resilience to future crises<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>UNCTAD calls on governments in developing countries to <strong>align environmental, science, technology, innovation, and industrial policies<\/strong>, and urges them to prioritize investment in greener and more complex sectors and provide incentives to shift consumer demand towards greener goods.<\/p>\n<p>The report also calls for an <strong>international programme to guarantee purchases of tradable green items<\/strong>, coordinated green technology research at the multinational level, increased support for regional <strong>centres of excellence<\/strong> for green technologies and innovation, and a <strong>multilateral fund<\/strong> to stimulate green innovations and enhance cooperation between countries.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>\u2018Least ready\u2019 countries<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The report\u2019s \u201c<strong>frontier technology readiness index<\/strong>\u201d shows that very few developing countries have the capacities needed to profit from such green tech as blockchain, drones, gene editing, nanotechnology, and solar power.<\/p>\n<p>Ranking 166 countries based on ICT, skills, research and development, industrial capacity, and finance indicators, the index is dominated by such high-income economies as the Netherlands, Singapore, Sweden and the United States.
