He said factors such as lifestyle were less important in his decision making.<\/p>\n<p data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cI am very interested in starting a research group\/centre that carries out world-leading research and technology transfer that benefits all people in the world,\u201d Lieber wrote.<\/p>\n<p data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cAs part of this process, I would also do what I have done very successfully in the past \u2013 train and support young scientists and faculty to become leaders in science and technology for the future,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<div data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">Lieber, 65, is a leader in the field of nanoscience and a pioneer in the integration of <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb e1llv60l0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/science\/article\/3232017\/chinese-italian-nanotechnology-research-helps-preserve-stone-and-repair-historic-church-scalzi?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">nanotechnology<\/span><\/a> for use in biology and medicine.<\/div>\n<p data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">He has published over 400 research papers in peer-reviewed journals, is named as the main inventor on over 50 US patents, and has won many awards for his work in chemistry and nanoscience.<\/p>\n<p data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Lieber was named the leading chemist in the world from 2000 to 2010 for the cumulative impact and number of citations of his scientific publications, according to a ranking by Thomson Reuters.<\/p>\n<div class=\"image-inline-container e1a5rv550 css-1llrc1m e1yqhwb40\" data-qa=\"Component-renderMap-StyledDiv\">\n<div class=\"image-inline caption e1fvabeq0 css-19sk4h4 ea9pn0s0\" data-qa=\"Component-Container\">\n<figure class=\"image-inline caption ea9pn0s1 css-dupp5v e1gf69pb0\" data-qa=\"ArticleImage-ArticleImageContainer\">\n<div data-qa=\"ArticleImage-ImageContainer\" class=\"css-0 e1gf69pb3\"><\/div><figcaption data-qa=\"ArticleImage-DescriptionContainer\" class=\"css-6potyr e1gf69pb1\">Charles Lieber has reportedly filed for permission to travel to discuss potential employment opportunities at the University of Hong Kong. Photo: Eugene Lee<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">Nanoscience, the study and use of molecules and structures at a very small scale, is listed as one of Beijing\u2019s scientific priorities under the <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb e1llv60l0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/science\/article\/3260307\/made-china-2025-china-meets-most-targets-manufacturing-plan-proving-us-tariffs-and-sanctions?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">\u201cMade in China 2025\u201d<\/span><\/a> development road map, the country\u2019s plan to upgrade its hi-tech industries and reduce reliance on imports.<\/div>\n<p data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">According to Lieber\u2019s research website, his work includes the synthesis of new nanoscale materials and the integration of nano materials into computing, photonics, bioelectronics and neural electronics.<\/p>\n<p data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Alumni of Lieber\u2019s laboratory have gone on to start their own nanotechnology-related companies and taken research and professor roles at high-ranking universities around the world.<\/p>\n<div data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">Lieber was arrested in 2020 as part of a US Department of Justice investigation under the now-defunct <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb e1llv60l0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/science\/article\/3271797\/us-china-initiative-significant-push-factor-chinese-scientists-exodus?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">China Initiative<\/span><\/a>, launched in 2018 to investigate American researchers believed to be contributing to theft of technical secrets and intellectual property.<\/div>\n<div data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">The initiative ended in 2022 amid criticism that it led to <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb e1llv60l0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/science\/article\/3228493\/axed-china-initiatives-racial-profiling-legacy-haunts-scientists-us?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">racial profiling<\/span><\/a> of ethnic Chinese researchers and bias against researchers with ties to Chinese research and universities.<\/div>\n<div data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">Lieber was <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb e1llv60l0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/article\/3218493\/ex-harvard-chemist-charles-lieber-avoids-jail-lying-about-china-work-gets-6-months-house-arrest?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">convicted in 2021<\/span><\/a> of making false statements to US federal investigators about ties to the Wuhan University of Technology and Beijing\u2019s Thousand Talents Plan, which aims to attract overseas researchers to bolster China\u2019s scientific development.<\/div>\n<div data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">He was also convicted of <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb e1llv60l0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/science\/article\/3160209\/video-shows-harvard-professor-initially-denying-bringing-cash?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">tax violations<\/span><\/a> for failing to report income from the university.
