Nanotech bags master supply deal for 1 GWh of batteries in Greece
October 20 (Renewables Now) – The European arm of US graphene-based batteries maker Nanotech Energy Inc has secured an order to supply more than 1 GWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS) for projects in Greece.
Nanotech Energy Europe BV has received a master purchase agreement that calls for it to deliver the equipment through 2028, it said on Thursday. The client is Athens-based Smile Energy.
Nanotech Energy says it is presently the world’s only manufacturer of high-performance non-flammable graphene-based batteries. The company explained that the contract in Greece will enable it to immediately expand its business in the region and help the country enhance its power infrastructure and continuity of energy supply.
Smile Energy aims to operate the first commercial, stationary BESS for several Greek islands. The company is already developing 300 MW of solar projects in Greece, Bulgaria and Romania, plus 700 MWh of energy storage schemes in the same region.
“That Nanotech Energy’s battery technology is safe, longer lasting than traditional batteries, and works in temperatures up to 60°C all makes for a compelling proposition,” said Ioannis Apostolos Bobolas, general manager of Smile Energy, adding that these products will give the company a “distinct competitive advantage” on the market.
