A scientist was killed after colliding with a roadblock that was placed in a haphazard manner at Kumbuka in Gonapola, Horana Saturday night. He was coming home in a luxury car carrying lotus flowers for an alms giving for his first-born child.

The deceased has been identified as Vimukthi Prasad Jayaweera (37), a scientist at the Institute of Nanotechnology, residing in Gonapala, Kumbuka East.

Investigations revealed that the primary cause of the accident was construction carried out near a man-hole containing underground telephone lines in the Gonapala Kubuka area.

The remaining parts of concrete and iron were piled up in the middle of the road without being removed from the place and the road barriers were placed unsafely, the police said.
